Garry's Mod (abbreviated GMod) is a 2006 sandbox game developed by Facepunch Studios and published by Valve. The base game mode of Garry's Mod has no set objectives and provides the player with a world in which to freely manipulate objects. Other game modes, notably Trouble in Terrorist Town, are created by other developers as mods and are. Each game in Garry’s Mod is an interesting adventure created by players in different parts of the world from imagination and creativity. Additionally, Garry’s Mod game comes with a vibrant and dynamic Steam Community, which regularly holds workshops focusing on more than 300,000 models, contraptions, and maps. While working with the.
Graphics and Sound – 4/5
Originally Garry's Mod was made on the Source engine. Ever since GMod was heavily influenced by it. It's filled with 3D buildings, NPCs and items. They are slightly rough-edged but quite responsive. All in all, GMod's graphics are reminiscent of early Counter-Strike games.
The best part of GMod is its physics. There are explosions, fire, shooting, plane crashing, etc. They all leave quite a satisfying impression thanks to particle, smoke and other effects. Objects in GMod act exactly the way you expect them to do. Water is sprinkly and splashy, weapons get hot-red from overheating, destructible buildings nicely collapse, and so on.
Besides, GMod has an excellent sound design. You'll find a whole caboodle of premium acoustic SFX: from a fiercely roaring motorboat to a speedily stuttering heavy M134 machine gun.
Gameplay – 5/5
Garry's Mod has no rules or limits. You have an extensive repertoire of NPCs, vehicles, buildings and decorations to tinker with. Not to mention a weapon arsenal from the likes of Half-Life, CS, Team Fortress, etc.
For example, Garry's Mod features such addons as:
- Jet-piloting simulator.
- Admin Gun. Destroy everything you see with a ridiculously powerful pistol.
- ZParachute Redux. Parachute like a stuntman.
- Air-to-surface missile. Learn what's it's like to be a missile.
- Sig-Wolf's Tank. Massacre NPCs with a tank.
And many others. You can either download these add-ons or design your own. All you need is a good idea and scenario. The rest is provided by the GMod. Zombie apocalypse, gang wars, alternative history of WWII — Garry's Mod can do it all.
Besides, you have an option to make a real movie. GMod supports scripted cutscenes and cinematic effects. So, if you've ever dreamt of making your own trash feature, like Grindhouse diptych, GMod is exactly what you need.
Controls – 5/5
Both sandbox and its add-ons are easily controlled with mouse + keyboard tandem. Although you will need a firm hand and a good eye to align NPCs in symmetrical lines or expressive poses (if it's needed, of course). As for playing the addons, it has classic FPS controls.
Lasting Appeal – 4.5/5
GMod is a whole universe. You can easily spend 1000+ hours playing it, and there are still will be new things to discover and try. Share your game design genius with others, invite a friend to complete a horror-quest filled with jumpscares or go berserk in one of the mass slaughter mods — there's plenty to do.
Difficulty Level
Your imagination is the only limit here. And you don't need any special skills to design a great add-on. On the contrary: the more strange, foolish and grotesque details your mod has, the better it will turn out!
I have been thinking for a while how to go about reviewing Garry's Mod as this is a game that is really limitless when you think about it. This is brought to us by Valve, but it is the community that has kept it running and no matter what you can think of, chances are someone has created it in Garry's Mod!
What Is The Point?
Well, the point is to screw around and just do what you want. Valve has created a massive sandbox world and they give you all the tools that you need in order to do what you want. Want to use the gravity gun from Half-Life 2? Well, you can do that. Want to use the Portal gun from Portal? Well, you can do that too! Even before you get to the community-created content, you have a ton of things that you can mess around within this game.

Garry's Mod Gameplay
Garry's Mod has a very robust set of multiplayer modes that will keep you busy for a very long time. It is worth noting that some may require you to own another game such as Team Fortress 2 for example in order to play them. Do not worry, as there are many other games that are made to be played just with what Garry's Mod is offering you.
Garry's Mod Steam
Valve has added tons of game modes here and some of my favorites are Trouble In Terrorist Town where you can be a detective trying to find criminals who are killing people. It also has the most fun and awesome version of “Prop Hunt” that I have ever had the pleasure to play. It really is stacked with stuff to do before you even get to what the community has to offer.
The Community Steps Up
Even if Valve did not have this game loaded with content, I would say that it is worth checking out alone for the content that the community has provided. I legit do not even know where to start in talking about this. if you are someone who is talented to make your own games, assets, and so on, Garry's Mod is pretty much limitless with what you can do. The only limit is your imagination. I am not really a “maker” more of a player so that is where I thrive.
To give you an example of how crazy this is. Just this morning I was playing some weird game where I was chasing down Peter Griffin from Family guy and trying to shoot him! You never know what the hell you are going to end up messing around with when you fire this up.
Garry's Mod is one of the most popular games on Steam for a very good reason! It is just about letting gamers have fun and there is nothing wrong with that at all. I find it to be the kind of game that I will come back to multiple times a month rather than playing for hours on end during a single run. That does not make it bad though, I am sure there are many others who play this all the time for hours on end and still want more!
Pros:
- The only limit is your imagination
- Even without the community content, there is a lot to do here
- I like the way it uses some of the iconic stuff from Valve properties
- Some of the stuff you can do is insane
- Some great use of licensed properties!
Cons:
- It can be daunting knowing what to play!
- Not sure it is going to be for everyone
